So it’s officially halfway through the first month of 2020 the start of a new decade and the end of an old one!
I want to start by wishing you a happy new year I hope it turns out to be a fantastic year for you!
I’m sure you will probably have set some fitness and nutrition goals for this year and that’s brilliant I wish you all the best!
So what I wanted to do was help you with 3 top tips on how to get yourself off to the best start and make this year the year you achieve the goals you’ve set out!
1)DON’T TAKE TOO MANY THINGS ON AT A TIME!
unfortunately one of the main reasons I see people fail with their fitness and health goals is that they bite off more than they can chew at one time!
What I mean by this is I see people who have been sitting on the sofa for the past six months eating fast food not doing much all of a sudden on the 1st of January decide to flip turn their lives upside down.
They flip turn their nutrition by banning all the food the use to enjoy, starting counting calories, start tracking macros and flip turn their daily activities by starting to exercise five times a week.
Where as I do love the enthusiasm they give this, unfortunately, it isn't suitable for a lot of people because this is a drastic change to their current lifestyle and current habit’s built into their pre-existing behaviours.
This will make it drastically harder for you to be able to sustain and one of the most important things to achieving your goal or not achieving your goal is if the plan is sustainable or not!
The best bit of advice I could give here if taking on a couple of things at once feels daunting is to start with the most important thing that you need to change right now, the thing that is keeping you furthest away from achieving your goal. So if your diet is really bad look at cleaning it up cut out processed foods, for example, if you’ve just been sat on your sofa for the past 6 months start exercising a couple of times a week, then gradually build up to where you want to be.
Whatever it is take that on first create a healthier habit to help you achieve your goal. The truth is you probably don’t need to do a lot to see some good results to start with getting the most out of each stage you can. Why do more than you need to right now make it as easy as possible haha!
Then when it becomes a lifestyle you can move onto the next most important thing and repeat the cycle again this way you’re not trying to change seven things at once it’s just one thing at a time then before you know it you’ll be looking back in a couple of months time and you’ve created a lot of healthy habits which will put you well on you’re way to achieving your goal but more importantly, you’ve made it sustainable.
This way you’ve created a healthier lifestyle which is a lot easier for you to keep up with and do on a day-to-day basis and doesn’t feel like a chore to do.
2)GET A PLAN!
Like Arnold said “You can have the best ship in the world, but if the captain doesn’t know where to go, he’s going to just drift around and is going to get lost”
This is the same with us when it comes to our fitness and health goal’s. If I am looking to lose body fat and build muscle but when I’m in the gym I’m doing 1RM’s on deadlift's next I’m jumping on the treadmill and running 2miles then I see there’s a yoga class going on so jump into the class for a while. Then with
my nutrition, I see one person doing Keto another doing carb cycling and another doing intermittent fasting so I bounce between each of them from week to week my body is going to be saying “What do you want me to adapt to!”
So you need a plan but more importantly, that plan HAS TO BE in line with your goal, this is massively important to achieving your goal or not achieving your goal!
So look at what you want to achieve. If it is to lose body fat and build muscle I would advise doing a balance of resistance training and cardio to get the best results. Start your session with resistance training then some cardio to end the session but also nutrition will be a key factor!
If you haven’t trained for a long time, or it’s your first time training there will be a small window at the start where you can build a bit of muscle and lose body fat at the same time then once you become more of a regular gym-goer it’s either one direction or the other!
My advice when you come to this point is if your unhappy with you're levels of body fat you current have is work on stripping it off before building muscle. A by-product of build muscle can be adding a bit of body fat. Also the fastest way to look like you’ve gained 10kg of muscle is actually to lose 10kg of body fat. You can see the muscles shape more visibly making them have the appearance of being bigger!
3)BASE YOUR PLAN AROUND WHAT YOU ENJOY!
If you love carbs don’t do Keto haha! I know this one seems pretty simple but honestly, it’s one I see overlooked a lot. If you love eating carbs but I told you to stop eating them how long do you think you
would last?... Not very long right!
Now don’t misinterpret what I’m saying you're going to have to change in some way otherwise you would have achieved your goal already. There will be challenges but that’s one of the best bits. Its character building!
What I mean is if you ban yourself from things you enjoy you will begin to have a negative association with what you’re doing and if we use the example like the one above with banning carbs when you really enjoy them you will get a negative association with food which isn’t healthy!
What we do is find modalities that suit your lifestyle at the minute. There are multiple ways to achieve your goals. If you find one that suits you then you will have a much greater chance to achieve your goal by making it sustainable. Like I've already said one of the most important things to achieving your goal is sustainability creating a healthy lifestyle rather than a quick fix!
So, look through training styles nutrition modalities. Do some research. See which styles suit you best but again remember it must be in line with your goal. Then put your plan in place!
